Islamic Emirate Claims ISIS No Longer a Threat in Afghanistan

Kabul: The spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, Zabihullah Mujahid, has reiterated that ISIS has been effectively suppressed in Afghanistan and no longer poses a threat in the country.

In an interview with TOLOnews, Mujahid emphasized that ISIS activities in the broader region are unrelated to Afghanistan. "The group has been significantly weakened and no longer holds any power in Afghanistan. While its presence may be felt elsewhere, we are confident that it does not pose a danger within our borders," he stated.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convened a special session on Monday to assess the threats posed by terrorist groups, particularly ISIS. The meeting included a review of the UN Secretary-General’s latest six-month report on ISIS threats, with a specific focus on Afghanistan.

The session also included discussions on extending the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), following a request from Algeria. These discussions took place behind closed doors.

Political analyst Fazl Rahman Oria pointed to ISIS activity in Pakistan's Balochistan region, stating that such bases threaten Afghanistan and the wider region. He stressed the need for international support to counter this challenge.

Another analyst, Salim Paigir, highlighted the importance of UNAMA’s continued presence in Afghanistan, stating that the mission has played a key role in aiding the country, particularly over the past three years.

UNAMA's current mandate is set to expire in March 2025, and its future was a key topic in the UNSC meeting.
